Round Potholders

These potholders will be a Christmas present for another bears fan I know. I used the same fabric as I did for the bears coasters. I got the fabric in a bag of quilting scraps from a garage sale, and I honestly almost just threw the fabric away because I am not, nor is anyone in my family, a bears fan. I didn't see when I would ever use it. But then I met some bears fans, so I'm glad I kept it!

I have made potholders before, so I had leftover insulated fleece and batting, so the only thing I bought for this project was the bias tape. Because I certainly don't keep bright orange bias tape on hand. The pictures don't really do it justice - it really is blindingly orange. But amazingly, the bias tape matched the print perfectly! I didn't think I'd find such a good match.

I cut about 9 inch circles out of the fabric, insulated fleece, and batting and I quilted all the layers together. For the pocket, I cut the top of the circle off and enclosed the raw edge with bias tape.

Then I basted the two pieces together and added a little loop so it can be hung up. I probably could have trimmed my threads a little better, but it's going to be covered by bias tape soon. Since there are so many layers, I had to trim the middle layers down a little so the bias tape would comfortably fit over it.

I pinned the bias tape in place, and sewed it on. I folded it over and tried to topstitch like I did for the pocket above. But wow, I had soooo much trouble getting a nice finish around the outside! I seriously sewed and unpicked the stitches about 4 times before I gave up and just hand sewed it. I don't love hand sewing, but in this case, it was so much easier and less stressful than machine! And it looks pretty, too.

I tacked down (well, up) the loop so it stays up, because otherwise it would just hang down towards the pocket. I used the same fabric as the inside of the pocket, because I had plenty.

I actually still have some insulated fleece and batting leftover, so I might make some more potholders (for me!) soon.

  2. I'm sorry! If it makes you feel any better, I definitely felt like a traitor making them.
