Welcome! And first dress review - McCalls 6887

Hi there. I'm Becky and I have decided to start a sewing blog. I will also write about kombucha/fermentation experiments and other things I make.

Well, let's dive right in. I finished this dress today. I used McCall's 6887 and a linen-look fabric.

Pattern: McCalls 6887, view B (modified)

What I liked: I like the round neckline and I think the dress silhouette is flattering. The dress was very easy to put together.

What I changed: I did not put the piping along the seams. Instead, I only used navy piping around the waist and neckline. I cut about 3/4" off the bottom of the skirt to shorten it slightly. I lowered the neckline by about 1.5 inches. I also used an invisible zipper.

Size and fitting: Initially, I cut a size 14 and did a full bust adjustment. The result was disastrous. I ended up cutting a straight size 10 (D cup), and making slight adjustments on my muslin. I took out 1" from the center front piece to eliminate neckline gape and 1.5" from the center back. I also took off 1 inch from the bottom of the back pieces because it was so much longer in the back than the front at the waistline.

Back view

I will probably sew this pattern again in the future, but with the piping along the seams. To be honest, the only reason I didn't do that on this dress is because I didn't have enough piping on hand... Next time I will prepare. I also want to try the view with the back cut-out.
